For awhile now I’ve been wanting to do this but I haven’t been able to find the time. However, this weekend I finally was able to through together a simple app (ruby) to put Pro Football Talk (PFT) on Twitter.

You can follow PFT here.

Fantasy Football

by zak on Sep.01, 2008, under Personal

Well, it’s that time again… Football season is upon us. And with football season comes fantasy football. This year I’m in three leagues (yikes). I was in three leagues last year and had a really hard time keeping up with all of them. This year will not be a repeat.

I’ve already drafted for all three teams and I have to say that I did okay. It could have been better…a lot better. But I’m content with what I have. Here are the rosters for all three of my teams:

Stupid Steelers Blue Team Purple Pride
Ben Roethlisberger, Pit QB Carson Palmer, Cin QB Tony Romo, Dal QB
Eli Manning, NYG QB Brett Favre, NYJ QB Vince Young, Ten QB
Marion Barber, Dal RB Edgerrin James, Ari RB Joseph Addai, Ind RB
Larry Johnson, KC RB Reggie Bush, NO RB Larry Johnson, KC RB
Laurence Maroney, NE RB DeAngelo Williams, Car RB Selvin Young, Den RB
Ronnie Brown, Mia RB Ray Rice, Bal RB Anquan Boldin, Ari WR
DeAngelo Williams, Car RB Shaun Alexander, FA RB Marvin Harrison, Ind WR
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Cin WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Cin WR Hines Ward, Pit WR
Wes Welker, NE WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ WR Nate Burleson, Sea WR
Nate Burleson, Sea WR Derrick Mason, Bal WR David Patten, NO WR
Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ WR D.J. Hackett, Car WR Todd Heap, Bal TE
Tony Scheffler, Den TE Todd Heap, Bal TE Randy McMichael, StL TE
Alge Crumpler, Ten TE Zach Miller, Oak TE Matt Stover, Bal K
Adam Vinatieri, Ind K Rian Lindell, Buf K Colts Defense, Ind D/ST
Steelers Defense, Pit D/ST    Adam Vinatieri, Ind K Packers Defense, GB D/ST
49ers Defense, SF D/ST    49ers Defense, SF D/ST
Colts Defense, Ind D/ST

This fantasy football season is going to be a lot of fun. I’ll be posting every so often about my progress throughout the season. Wish me luck!

RHCT Certified

by zak on Aug.16, 2008, under Personal

This past week I’ve been in Red Hat training for their RHCT certification. The class was fun and I learned a lot. On Friday I took the 3 hour certification exam. It was challenging but I passed with 100%. Now I’m officially a Red Hat Certified Technician.

The next step is becoming RHCE certified. I’ll be scheduling that class hopefully for some time early 2009.

CentOS: Free Red Hat Enterprise Linux

by zak on Aug.10, 2008, under Linux

Awhile back I was looking for a Linux operating system to do some testing on. I needed to test on Red Hat Enterprise Linux but was not about to pay out the $349/yr for a RHEL license. I’m just to cheap for that. That’s when I stumbled upon CentOS.

CentOS is a free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux… Well, kind of.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is technically an open source operating system…meaning the source code is publicly available. However, the compiled operating system requires a license which costs money.

CentOS is built from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code. Any Red Hat branding and artwork is removed. Also, any non-free packages are altered in compliance with the Red Hat redistribution policies. You can read more about this here.

The current CentOS version is CentOS 5. In my experience, CentOS 5 runs great and is identical to RHEL 5 under the hood. I’ve been running it on my server at home for several months now with no issues.
